Who We Are

Our Story, Our Mission, Our Community

Our Journey

The Chelmsford Afghan Community was born out of a shared need for connection. Many Afghan families in our city found themselves feeling isolated, torn between their love for Afghanistan and their new lives in the UK. Without the presence of close relatives, simple joys like celebrating cultural festivals or navigating difficult times like illness felt overwhelmingly lonely. Our children also missed out on the natural opportunity to mingle with peers who shared their language and traditions.

CAC was established to change that narrative. For many of us, moving to the UK meant leaving behind our extended relatives and the close-knit support networks we grew up with. We are a family built by community — fully volunteer-run, created by and for Afghan residents living in Chelmsford and the wider Essex county.

CAC was established to change that narrative. We are a family built by community.

Our Mission

To foster a supportive, inclusive, and culturally rich community for Afghans in Chelmsford — providing connection, resources, and a genuine sense of belonging, and ensuring no family has to face life's milestones alone.

Our Vision for Essex

While our foundation is built on supporting Afghan families, our vision extends outward. We are deeply committed to integrating with and contributing to the broader Essex community. We actively seek dialogue and collaboration with other local groups to improve our city. By maintaining our Afghan culture and values, we are excited to share the beauty, hospitality, and richness of our heritage with the world around us.

A Community for Everyone

CAC is a community for all Afghan residents — men, women, families, single individuals, students, and elders. Whether you are a single mother building a new life in Essex, a young woman studying away from family, or a grandmother who simply wants to connect with others who share her language and traditions, you are equally at home here.

We recognise that within Afghan culture, women thrive best when they have their own space alongside the broader community. CAC has a dedicated Ladies' WhatsApp group, run entirely by female members of the community, providing a private and comfortable space for news, advice, and friendship — without barriers.

You do not need to be part of a family membership to belong. Individual membership is open to everyone.

Our Community Spaces

  • Men's WhatsApp Group

Community news, event announcements, and mutual support for all male members.

  • Ladies' WhatsApp Group

A private, female-only space run by female community members — open to all women in CAC, regardless of membership type.

  • Community Events

Family picnics, Eid celebrations, Nau Rooz, and cultural gatherings — for everyone.

Celebrating Our Heritage Together

A vibrant culture is meant to be shared and celebrated. At CAC, we organise regular gatherings to ensure our traditions remain alive and our families stay connected. From large summer family picnics in the park to joyous communal celebrations for religious and cultural festivals like Eid and Nau Rooz, these events are the heartbeat of our community.

These gatherings are especially vital for our younger generation, providing a joyful environment where our children can form lifelong friendships, speak their mother tongue, and experience the warmth of Afghan traditions right here in Essex.

Join the CAC Family

Every member of CAC is a volunteer dedicated to uplifting one another. We welcome Afghan families, couples, single individuals, single mothers, and anyone who wants to be part of something bigger. If you want to be part of a larger community or have unique skills you wish to share to help others, we would love to welcome you.

The Community Fund & Funeral Services

To ensure we can support our members during their most difficult moments, we maintain a dedicated community fund. The primary purpose of this fund is to provide comprehensive funeral services and immediate support for members and their families in times of bereavement. Further details regarding the community fund and funeral support provisions will be gladly provided upon request.
